Nick Smith

"I DELIGHT IN CREATING ABSTRACT WORKS WITH OBJECTIVE TEXT CONTENT, IT'S A BIT LIKE SOMEONE HARD OF SIGHT PUTTING ON SPECTACLES GOING FROM BLURRED TO FOCUSED."

Nick Smith’s compositions rest comfortably between abstraction and figuration, appearing from afar to be pixelated versions of famous paintings from Western art history. Each is a collage of hundreds of paint swatches Smith has assembled to form images of iconic paintings, like his tributes to masterpieces by Grant Wood and Leonardo da Vinci, American Gothic (2020) and Mona Lisa (2015). Smith began reconstructing paintings in 2014, when he recreated Andy Warhol’s portrait of Marilyn Monroe. His works are highly sought after by international collectors. While best known for his replicas of museum masterpieces, Smith also uses color chips to reproduce movie posters, nude portraits, and still lifes of condiments. He also incorporates text into his pieces by replacing paint names on swatches with evocative words, adding a narrative layer to the work. A graduate of Coventry University, Smith’s previous work in interior design led to his choice of medium.

Wes Lang

b. 1972

"To Tell The Truth"

Archival print on cotton paper

Wes Lang

1972

Wes Lang makes paintings and works on paper that reconceive American tropes and historical narratives. He renders national iconography such as flags, cowboys, native headdresses, and eagles alongside skulls, skeletons, and the grim reaper, suggesting a nihilistic vision of the United States and its myths. Lang also invokes art historical influences such as Philip Guston, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Cy Twombly. Folk legends, Taoist philosophy, and clippings from newspapers and pornographic magazines also feature in his bold, rambling graphic schemas and tableaux. Lang has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Brussels, Stockholm, and Copenhagen. He made his institutional debut in 2014 at the ARoS Aarhus Museum of Art, and his work belongs in the collections of the National Gallery of Denmark, the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. The artist also works with cast-bronze sculpture, collage, hotel stationery, glass, fabric, and other media.

There is a plastic island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It´s called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and it is the size of 3 Great Britain. Accumulated through the years, it just floats there, only held together by surface tension.

The whales and sea life have only one chance to make it. To survive they has become refugees. They must leave and to look for a new beginning.

Here you see one of the first to make it. Still with in dreams and high hope.

This series of paintings depict my imaginary visions of nature colliding with the man-made city. We humans are increasingly becoming a product of our own urban environment and the gap between us and the natural world continues to widen. As an artist I find this subject matter of great interest as it in many respects touches upon some of the most crucial global issues of our time
